Our mission is to cultivate a community where reading is accessible, enjoyable, for all people interested in any genre. In a world where fewer people read for pleasure and books are often associated solely with homework, we aim to revive the simple joy of picking up a book. This club is available to all people as anyone can become a reader. The books we read do not have to be long and dull and exists to remind students that reading can be relaxing, and fun! That is why we will have discussion and polling on what to read each month. Any length and genre is open for discussion, whether it be mystery, a comic, a romance novel, the stories to immerse yourself are endless.

We are a co-ed ski racing club. We primarily race and train, but we also love to have fun free skiing. We race in the Reynolds Division of USCSA (United States Collegiate Skiing Association) against several other Maine colleges and universities (Bates, Bowdoin, UMaine Orono, UMaine Farmington, and St. Joseph’s College) almost every weekend between January and March. No racing experience is necessary, and the ski races are all very fun, but you should be an advanced all-mountain skier.

The Colby Birds will create a community on campus where students, faculty, and members of the Colby community can share their mutual appreciation for nature through participation in bird-focused activities. Proposed programs include birdwatching opportunities and trips on and off-campus, building nest boxes, establishing and maintaining native gardens for bird habitats, collaborating with local/regional/national birding and conservation organizations, and educational opportunities such as speaker events and workshops. Birding, and nature-appreciation more broadly, are activities that anyone can partake in regardless of experience. The Colby Contra Dance Club organizes contra dances on campus for the Colby and greater Waterville community as well as taking field trips to local contra dances. Contra dances are community-oriented folk dances with a live string band and caller. Contra calls that you might recognize include “do-si-do,” “promenade,” and “swing your partner.” Contra dancing is very friendly to beginners; since each dance allows the opportunity to be with a new partner, and is taught by the caller in advance, newcomers catch on quickly. The Colby College Equestrian Club is an active campus organization. The team is a recognized club sport at Colby College, and is active in both year-round lessons and numerous recognized events and competitions throughout the fall and spring seasons. While a number of our riders compete in various IHSA-sanctioned events across New England, competing is certainly not a requirement—many students simply enjoy riding and improving their skills in weekly lessons with our instructors. In addition to showing, the team participates in numerous clinics, community days and fun shows. The team also gets together for team dinners regularly. Men’s Club Volleyball is a competitive team that holds practice 2x a week, focusing on improving skills, teamwork, and communication. We participate in the NECVL league, which is the New England collegiate volleyball league for men. In the Fall, our priority is to teach new players organized volleyball while providing a space for more advanced players to develop their skills and mesh with the team. In the Spring, we play against other schools in New England at competitive tournaments that culminate in qualification for the Regional tournament, which is based on record. We also organize scrimmages against other schools such as Bowdoin and Bates College to provide more opportunities for players to play competitively. Although the focus of the club is on playing volleyball, our priority is to create a safe learning environment that welcomes everyone.

The One Love Foundation was created in 2010 after Yeardley Love, a senior at UVA, was killed by her ex-boyfriend. Her family started One Love to raise awareness and educate students about the warning signs of relationship abuse.

Catered specifically to Colby’s queer community, The Bridge is Colby’s all-inclusive, LGBTQIA2S+ student-run club. We work on intersectional community building through campus outreach/education and justice-based action. The Bridge strives to create and foster spaces that serve the diverse range of identities at Colby and sponsors events such as Tea Times, Family Dinners, and our annual Transgender November Month and Pride Week programming. All Colby students, whether they identify as queer or allies, are encouraged to attend our events. Members plan events that they want to happen at Colby, and this member involvement directly translates into a more empowered, unified, and engaged community on campus. Often within the LGBTQIA2S+ community, queer experiences are centered around those who identify as cisgender, white men. As part of our goal to be as inclusive and equitable as possible, The Bridge will be a space that centers the experiences of QTPOC within our work; we strive to create spaces where all members of our community feel welcomed. This means that our club will not tolerate the values of white supremacy, misogyny, transphobia, ableism, colonialism, and other forms of oppressive principles. In order to guide this work, we draw upon these (updated) quotes from “Queers Read This”: “Being queer is not about a right to privacy; it is about the freedom to be public, to just be who we are. It means everyday fighting oppression; homophobia, transphobia, racism, misogyny … and our own self-hatred. Being queer means leading a different sort of life. It aims to create a community which fosters a fun and camaraderie-centered environment for anyone interested, for both brand-new players as well as seasoned veterans. Trading card games are a unique interest with a broad demographic, and this club aims to provide an official and organized setting for people to play, trade, and learn.

The Mayflower Hill Broadcasting Corporation is a student-run non-commercial radio station operating 365 days a year. Members of the local community keep WMHB broadcasting through the full year and students host radio shows during the academic year. The station features all varieties of music as well as special events. The studio and offices are located in the basement of the Roberts Building.

The purpose of this club is to provide students with the opportunity to play hockey recreationally as well as compete in some smaller-scale scrimmages and games. The club is open to anyone familiar with and willing to follow the rules of women’s hockey. It is recommended for players that have participated in the game previously (within that, skill-levels can vary).

The Colby College Club Sports Program is a voluntary and recreational sports program organized by students, designed to meet athletic needs not met by existing intramural and intercollegiate programs. The purpose is to facilitate simple drills and scrimmages for players of all skill levels. The basic philosophy and key to the success of the program is the emphasis placed on participation, competition and good sportsmanship.
